You Can't Aim at the Sweet Spot

Twenty-five years of research on the mental game of tennis, one model with a pun in it, and two interventions — one of which takes ten minutes and a pen.

You’re serving at 30–40. You’ve been here before, it went badly the last two times, and you know that — and knowing it is the problem. You toss the ball. Somewhere between the toss and the contact, a body that has hit this serve ten thousand times without your help stops and waits for instructions.

That moment has been studied extensively. Most of the research has been sitting in journals in three languages for twenty-five years without anyone joining it up.

Somebody has now joined it up — a scoping review covering studies from 2000 to March 2025, in English, French and Greek. That last detail is a small good sign: a lot of sport psychology work sits in languages that English-language reviews quietly skip.

Out of it comes a model called the Resilience Racket.

Yes, it’s a pun. It’s also load-bearing.

The model

It maps onto the parts of an actual racket:

The frame is the interesting one. Nobody buys a racket for the frame. It’s the part you never think about — and it’s what holds the strings under tension. If it’s warped, nothing you do to the strings matters.

That’s the model’s real argument, and it isn’t really about tennis. Almost every conversation about the mental game only ever discusses the strings — the individual’s toughness, their nerve, their resilience. This model insists the environment is a component of performance, not the weather performance happens in.

The two-sided finding

The review’s headline result cuts both ways.

Tennis participation is associated with reductions in depressive and anxiety symptoms, improved self-confidence, and enhanced resilience.

Competitive tennis presents significant psychological demands — elevated stress, and susceptibility to maladaptive coping.

The same activity, at different intensities, running in opposite directions. Which means the health benefit a parent imagines when they put a nine-year-old into a squad is real — and the thing they’re actually signing up for may not be the thing that delivers it.

Nobody can tell you where the line sits, because nobody knows.

Intervention one: a routine, in one specific slot

Pre-performance routines sound like sports-psych wallpaper. Bounce the ball a set number of times. Same ritual, every time.

There’s a meta-analysis behind it — 112 effect sizes across pre-post and experimental designs, with positive effects in both low-pressure and pressurised conditions.

But read the second layer. In low-pressure conditions the effect is moderate and the estimate is tight: Hedges’ g = 0.64, CI [0.45, 0.83]. Under pressure the effect looks slightly largerg = 0.70 — and that’s the number that gets quoted. The interval around it is [0.24, 1.16].

That’s an enormous spread. At the bottom end the routine barely does anything; at the top it’s one of the largest effects in sport psychology. The data cannot tell those two apart.

So the moment that matters most is the moment we know least about.

That’s not a reason to skip it. “We don’t know” and “we have a plausible mechanism, a consistent direction of effect across 112 estimates, and poor precision at the exact point of maximum interest” are different states of knowledge. The direction is consistent, the precision is bad, and the cost of doing it is zero. Worth acting on. Not worth being smug about.

The genuinely practical part is where to use one.

The second serve. It’s one of the only moments in tennis offering both conditions a routine needs: it isn’t influenced directly by your opponent — nobody is doing anything to you — and you have time to execute the elements. Most of tennis gives you neither.

That reframes the whole thing. A pre-performance routine isn’t a personality. Nobody needs to become “a routine person.” It’s a checklist for a moment where a checklist can physically fit — which is the difference between “be more mentally tough,” which is useless, and “here is a twelve-second procedure for one specific ball.”

You can teach a fourteen-year-old a checklist in an afternoon. You cannot teach her a personality.

Intervention two: write down what you’re worried about

This is the one worth trying tomorrow, and the underlying evidence isn’t from tennis at all.

In a 2011 study published in Science, Ramirez and Beilock had students write for ten minutes about their thoughts and feelings regarding an exam they were about to sit. Those students performed significantly better than students who didn’t write, or who wrote about something unrelated — and the effect was strongest for students who were habitually anxious.

It helps most the people who need it most, which is unusual, and part of why the finding stuck.

The mechanism is the good bit, because it explains why this isn’t a fridge magnet. Anxiety about performance competes for the same mental resources performance requires. Worry occupies working memory — the system holding small pieces of information and keeping you on task. Writing the worries down offloads them and frees the capacity back up.

So it isn’t therapeutic. It’s not about processing your feelings. It’s storage. You’re clearing RAM. Which also explains the anxious-students result: more running in the background, less capacity left over.

The honest caveat: that was an exam. A tennis match is physical, two hours long, adversarial, with someone actively trying to make it worse for you. The tennis review doesn’t cover expressive writing at all — this one is imported. There is subsequent work on choking under pressure, but the strongest and most famous evidence is educational. Applying it to sport is an inference from a well-supported mechanism to a related domain. That’s defensible. It’s also exactly how people end up confidently wrong.

Do it anyway. The downside is a piece of paper and ten minutes — whereas the downside of most mental-game advice is a kid internalising you’re not tough enough for a decade. The asymmetry is very favourable.

Back to the frame

Both interventions live in the strings. They’re things an individual does, which is why they’ll get all the attention — and why the model’s central claim will get ignored, because it’s the least actionable part.

It’s much easier to tell a player to write her worries down than to tell a club its competition schedule is the problem, or to tell a parent that the car ride home is part of the performance environment.

But the negative findings — elevated stress, maladaptive coping — don’t come from nowhere. They come from a structure: scheduling, ranking pressure, how much of the year is competitive, whether the adults nearby are calm. If the frame is warped, the best routine in the world just asks the player to hold more tension with better technique.

You’re stringing a broken racket.

The objection worth making: the frame is also the least evidenced part of the model. The routines have a meta-analysis. The writing has a paper in Science. The frame has a metaphor. And “the environment matters” is a claim that can’t lose — player thrives, good frame; player burns out, warped frame. This is a scoping review: it maps a literature, it doesn’t test a model. So the most useful idea in it is also the one carrying the least weight. That’s worth saying out loud rather than waiting for somebody else to say it.

The annoying conclusion

In the model, the sweet spot is where physical readiness, psychological resilience and environmental support converge — the frame included.

On a real racket, the sweet spot is not a place you aim at. You can’t decide to hit it. It’s what happens when everything else is set up properly and you stop trying.

Which makes the conclusion of twenty-five years of research faintly maddening: you can’t get to the sweet spot by aiming at it — but you can build a racket that has one.
