Where the Decade Went

Everyone thinks time speeds up because you stop making memories. A study of 120 people aged 20 to 91 found the opposite — and then a caveat that undoes half of it.

Ask anyone past forty where the last ten years went and you get the same answer. Gone. No idea.

And everyone has the same explanation ready. You stop making memories. Nothing new happens, so there’s nothing to look back on, and the decade collapses into nothing. It’s the version in every article on the subject and it’s the one your uncle offers at Christmas.

A study published in April tested it. It doesn’t hold.

What they did

Researchers working across Italy and German-speaking Europe recruited 120 people aged 20 to 91 and measured two things.

The first was a subjective time questionnaire — how quickly did the past ten years pass, and how quickly did the past year? A five-point scale, very slowly to very fast. It sounds soft. It’s the standard instrument, and the age pattern it detects has been replicated many times over.

The second was an autobiographical fluency task. Ninety seconds to name as many specific events from your own life as you could, then rate each one: how vivid, how significant, how it felt at the time, how it feels now.

That second measure is the archive. If the folk explanation is right — fewer stored events, faster decade — this is where it should show up.

What they found

It didn’t show up. There was no significant association between how fast the decade felt and either the number of memories people produced or what those memories were worth to them.

And the older participants weren’t scraping the barrel. They rated their recollections as more vivid and more meaningful than the younger participants rated theirs.

What did carry the age effect was somewhere else entirely. Inside a short cognitive battery sits a delayed memory subtest — you’re given material, there’s a gap, you’re asked to recall it. It measures whether new information got laid down at all. Model age as the predictor, the sense of a fast decade as the outcome, and delayed recall in between, and the mediation holds. Partially, not completely, but it holds.

The size of your archive and your ability to add to it are two different things. Almost all the anxiety about time is about the first. Almost all the mechanism appears to be in the second.

That distinction is the whole finding. It isn’t that older people have fewer memories — they don’t. It isn’t that the archive is thinning. By their own ratings it’s richer. It’s that the capacity to write to it has changed.

Which produces a strange and rather kind possibility: you can have had a full decade, hold vivid memories of it, and still feel as though it happened to someone else at speed.

The part the coverage leaves out

Here is where it gets less tidy, and more interesting.

The authors ran an exploratory analysis. They removed the youngest group — the 20 to 29 year olds — and re-ran the model. The age effect disappeared.

Which means a meaningful share of what looks like “time speeds up as you get older” is better described as “time runs unusually slowly for people in their twenties,” with everyone afterwards roughly level. That’s the authors’ own reading, and it rarely survives into the write-ups.

Two more things worth stating plainly. The design is cross-sectional: it compares a seventy-year-old to a thirty-year-old, not a thirty-year-old to herself at seventy, and those are not the same comparison. And the age-and-time-speed effect across this literature is modest — correlations in the region of 0.2 to 0.3. Real, replicated, not large.

So nothing here licenses the advice everyone will draw from it. Nobody in this study was given novelty and then reported a slower decade. You cannot get a prescription out of a snapshot.

Why the caveat improves the story

The version where the twenties are the odd ones out is more interesting than the version where old brains encode less.

Think about what’s actually different at twenty-five. It isn’t your hippocampus. It’s that your life is still structurally producing firsts — new city, new work, new people, no clear picture of next year. Unfamiliar material arrives whether you want it or not.

Then somewhere in your thirties that stops. Not because you got old. Because you got settled.

And settling is the goal. It’s what everyone is working towards: the stable work, the house, the people who already know you. Nobody’s ambition is to be twenty-six forever, living out of a bag. But nobody mentions the bill either. Every good thing about a settled life — the competence, the routine, knowing where everything is — is the same property described in nicer words. It’s a life you can run on very little new information.

That isn’t a brain problem you’re stuck with. It’s a structural feature of how an adult life gets built, and structures can be worked on.

A holiday is two weeks. A different route home is every day. Which of those do you think shows up in a decade?

Be honest about the status of that, though. The study doesn’t license it. What it offers is a plausible mechanism, and the advice that follows costs nothing and can’t hurt you. Acting on that is a reasonable choice. It is not the same claim as “research shows.”

What’s actually worth taking

Two things.

The feeling isn’t an audit. If you’ve had the thought that the last ten years disappeared and you must therefore have wasted them — the wasting is not what this evidence points at. People with rich, vivid, meaningful memories report exactly the same compression. A lot of people carry that quietly and never say it out loud.

The archive and the pen are different problems. Nearly all the anxiety about vanished time is about how much is stored. Nearly all the mechanism, on this evidence, sits in whether new material is still being written. And you don’t fix the second by regretting the first.
